NC Grant Deadline Extended for Boating Infrastructure Grants (BIG) 

Deadline Extended until November 10, 2005

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced another round of grants to help improve docking facilities for recreational transient, non-trailerable boats along the U.S. navigable waterways.

 The BIG program provides states with funding for mooring buoys, day-docks, transient slips, safe harbor facilities (including temporary safe anchorage or a harbor of refuge during a storm), floating and fixed piers and breakwaters, dinghy docks, restrooms, retaining walls, bulkheads, dockside utilities, pumpout stations, trash collections and recycling facilities, dockside electric, water and telephone capabilities, navigational aids and marine fueling stations.

Marina Wastewater Seminar rescheduled for 10/24/05 at 1 PM  

Originally scheduled for September 19th, this workshop was postponed due to hurricane Ophelia. During the seminar, participants will learn a simple method for treating collected wastewater involving chemistry and filtration. North Carolina Division of Water Quality personnel also will attend the two-hour seminar, and will be on hand to discuss different options as well. The cost for the seminar is $25. Class size will be limited to 20 people. The seminar will be held at NC MARTEC on the campus of Carteret Community College. NC Boat Builders Grow:

Cobia, Egret, True World, Briglia, and Twinn Finn

The ranks of NC boat builders have grown in the past few months. Cobia Boat Company (www.cobiaboats.com/) announced recently that it will be moving its manufacturing to the McDowell County Industrial Park in Marion; True World Marine (www.trueworldmarine.com) is relocating to the Jarrett Bay Marine Industrial Park in Beaufort; Egret Boat Company has announced a move to the Beaufort County Industrial Park in Washington; Briglia Boat Works has opened it doors in the Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park in Wanchese; and Dennis Schrieber of Twinn Finn  LLC has obtained a patent for pushboat hull and rudder configurations and will soon be building pushboats and small barges in Williamston.

Hatteras Yachts Grows, Tiara Goes 

 Hatteras Yachts has just announced that Mark Harakal has been named president of Hatteras Yachts in New Bern and will be responsible for a new startup at the 165,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Swansboro acquired from Tiara Yachts. Bill Naumann has been named the president of the Hatteras Collection within the Boat Group at Brunswick.

Registration opens for training summit   

Online registration is under way at www.abycinc.org for the second annual Conference on Marine Industry Technical Training, to be held Jan. 23–24 at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, just outside Tampa, Fla. COMITT, co-produced by the American Boat & Yacht Council, the National Marine Manufacturers Association and Professional BoatBuilder magazine, will provide a forum to discuss technical workforce education, training, certification and professional development.
