August 2005 - NC Marine TradeWinds Newsletter

SBTDC NC Marine Trades Services - Mike Bradley, Editor

Temporarily back to the old format NC Marine TradeWinds e-mail newsletter

Time constraint issues prevail as this newsletter has to get out today or not for weeks. The editor is taking on a new hip tomorrow and won’t be climbing the steps to the 2nd floor office for a while. I expect to be back for phone and email in three weeks and in good walking shape for the October IBEX show and Booth # 1050. Last month’s newsletter can be found on www.NCwaterways.com website.

NMMA: ADA Access Rules Should Not Apply to Recreational Boats

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Chicago, IL - Dave Marlow, Brunswick Boat Group’s director of product integrity, testified on behalf of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) at a public hearing on proposed new American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines for vessels. “It is important for the Access Board and the Department of Transportation to be clear that these guidelines do not apply to recreational boats or bareboat charters.  A personal recreational boat like a personal car is not a ‘public accommodation’ or ‘specified public transportation’ under Title III of the ADA.”  However, Mr. Marlow also told the Board, “the recreational boating industry would like to emphasize that we stand ready to assist any customer who would like to purchase a modified recreational boat.” To read Mr. Marlow’s testimony, visit:
