| (THE FOLLOWING DOES NOT APPLY IF:
Your UST system met the 1998 upgrade requirements before January 1, 1991)
If your Underground Storage Tank (UST) is located
near wells and/or waters designated High Quality Water, Outstanding
Resource Water, Water Supply I, Water Supply II, or Shellfishing, you may
soon be required to upgrade your system to secondary containment. For UST
information go to this site:
http://ust.ehnr.state.nc.us/permits.html.
Secondary containment includes interstitial monitoring, which means
there has to be a space between the two walls that can be monitored as a
form of leak detection.. Spray linings, as well as steel tanks coated with
fiberglass do not meet the State’s definition of secondary containment.
The interstitial monitoring method used must be third party certified.
Tanks and piping must be monitored for leaks every 30 days.
